Students from all over the city of Newark came together to explore the issue of food security in a documentary supported by Newark Beth Israel Medical Center, Children\u2019s Hospital of New Jersey, and RWJBarnabas Health\u2019s Social Impact and Community Investment Practice. The documentary, Food For Thought: The Path to Food Security in Newark, raises awareness about how important it is for a city\u2019s residents to have access to fresh, nutritious food.<\/p>\n

Here is what we learned:<\/p>\n

According to Darrell K. Terry Sr., President and CEO of \u00adNewark Beth Israel Medical Center and Children\u2019s Hospital of New Jersey, food security is contingent upon three things:<\/p>\n

    \n
  1. Understanding what healthy food is<\/li>\n
  2. Being able to afford it<\/li>\n
  3. Having convenient access to it<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n

    What happens if you don\u2019t have food security?<\/p>\n

    Without convenient access to fresh, nutritious food you may \u00adsuffer from:<\/p>\n

    A. Health problems like obesity and diabetes
    \nB. An inability to concentrate on work and schoolwork<\/p>\n

    What is being done about it in Newark?<\/p>\n
