Overview

The BE 100s campaign is an annual flagship initiative by Black Enterprise, spotlighting the nation’s largest Black-owned businesses. For this high-visibility campaign, I led the end-to-end creation of a dedicated microsite that would serve as a dynamic digital hub showcasing the top 100 companies, complete with detailed CEO profiles, company financials, and sector categorization.

Objectives

  • Create a centralized digital experience for the BE 100s campaign.
  • Feature rich, searchable profiles of each business and its CEO.
  • Present financial data in an accessible, visually engaging way.
  • Ensure a mobile-first, responsive design to cater to users across all devices.
  • Align with Black Enterprise’s brand identity and editorial tone, while modernizing its digital presence.

My Role

I served as the lead UX/UI designer and developer, responsible for translating editorial vision and user needs into a seamless web experience. My responsibilities included:

  • Wireframing & Prototyping: Low-fidelity and high-fidelity wireframes for desktop and mobile.
  • User Experience Design: Navigation flows, information architecture, and interactive components.
  • Visual Design: Designing the UI system to reflect the premium quality of the BE 100s brand.
  • Web Development: Full front-end development using responsive design principles and integration with a content management system (CMS).
Reflections

This project was a rewarding blend of storytelling, data presentation, and technical execution. Collaborating closely with the editorial and brand teams, I was able to ensure that both content and design served the audience with clarity, dignity, and impact.

  • Interactive Company Directory: Users can explore all 100 companies by industry or rank, with filter and search functionality.
  • CEO Spotlight Pages: Individual profiles for each CEO, highlighting their achievements, background, and leadership philosophies.

  • Mobile Optimization: Designed for seamless performance and legibility on smartphones and tablets.
  • Content Integration: Modular design for editors to easily update or expand profiles.

Tools & Technologies

  • Design: Photoshop, Illustrator, InDesign (wireframes, UI components, and prototypes)
  • Development: HTML, CSS, JavaScript (with React), CMS integration (WordPress/Custom API)
  • Analytics: Google Analytics for tracking user engagement and behavior

Outcome

The final product delivered a clean, elegant experience that honored the legacy of Black excellence in business while providing a user-centered experience for both casual readers and industry professionals.
